Adobe Photoshop CS5 Content Aware Fill

I just downloaded the trial version of Photoshop CS5 to test out for 1 month. One of the new features of Adobe Photoshop CS5 is content aware fill. It is very useful to remove unwanted objects in photos.

For example, there are a lot of dried leaves around the cross which I do not want. I use the content aware tool to remove them.

This is the end result! This is totally done by Photoshop automatically. I didn't touch up afterward. You can click on the photo to zoom in. I'm pretty impressed with it! :)

Here's another photo. Obviously, the flag post is unsightly.

Using the content aware tool, I have removed the flag post. This automatic process has done most of the work, afterward, you can further touch up to cover all the minor details left out by the tool. I admit content aware fill is really very convenient and save up lots of time!

I wanted to make this look like more natural without any human activities. So, I will remove the boat.

The boat is gone!

I use the content aware tool to remove some people from the photo. This is a more complex scene.

The tool still work! If I were to use the clone tool to remove the people from the photo, it will be a lot more work. The content aware fill really helps much and speed up the work flow.

Lastly, a photo with no pattern. I wanted to remove the unsightly dustbin. Without any similar pattern, content aware tool doesn't work so well.

The dustbin is removed automatically. As you can see, content aware tool works very well with photos that have lots of similar patterns. I believe it can still be done. I will explore further how this tool can work in more complex photo without similar pattern.

By the way, CS5 starts, runs and exits much faster than my CS2. I only have 1GB of RAM and my Mac is old. The improvement in speed is very obvious during editing of photos and also during exporting of photos into web format. CS2 export tool is quite slow.

As I try out CS5 more, I will tell you more of its exciting improvements and new features! :)
